Tsuritama Ep. 9 Review (aka Hairdryers, Tears, and Friendship)

So many feelings.

I love this show. I love this show so much.

It's ridiculous and brilliant and sad and quirky and amazing and I love it.

This episode reflects all of that so perfectly.

We start out with the Duck attack squad appearing in these bizarre-looking suits (they say they're for waterproofing, but I think you could get much less ridiculous waterproof suits than these).

They are given orders to go find the aliens (Haru too, despite Akira's protests) and are armed and ready with...

...hairdryers?

Only in Tsuritama.

So, basically their job is to keep people dry and away from any water. Yeah, good luck with that.

They set out to do that, while Akira is stuck inside his little monitoring station with a guard. Look at how adorably distressed he is here.

Later on, he plays an awesome little trick on his guard, who had a bunch of curry and got really thirsty. He taunts him with a drink he has (because the guard had been taunting him with food) and then slips a sleeping mixture into it before handing it over.

Tapioca approves.

Yuki, on the other hand, is trying to find Haru, who's mysteriously vanished. While he's looking, he gets ambushed by the Duck hairdryer crew, who question him and his grandmother.

Meanwhile, Haru and Koko are planning their own attack--on the enemy alien under the water. No words to describe this scene...it's beautiful and heartwrenching, as they attack hand-in-hand but Koko is overwhelmed and is lost in the fight.

Can I hug him? He's so sad in this episode, and he needs some sort of reassurance...

Yuki sneaks out of the house to search, and is confronted by Akira, who reveals his affiliation with Duck.

I love the awkward pause that always follows this introduction. And it's even more awkward in this costume.

He tells Yuki about everything that's going on, and that he should avoid Haru because he's an alien too.

Yuki disagrees, and leaves, finding Haru in the house, water gun in hand. This is Heartwrenching Scene #2, right here. Haru tells him that he hates him and that he should leave Enoshima.

Then he squirts Yuki with the gun and he blacks out.

Haru then goes on a rampage through the town, shooting everybody and ordering them to leave.

....and Yuki awakens on a bus to discover there is an evacuation going on. He talks to his grandmother about what happened, and she reveals how Haru was begging her for help before he shot her with the water gun. Then he asks why she had let Haru stay with them. She replies with "I like flowers" and then says she thought Haru was like a flower and that Yuki needed a flower in his life.

Even his grandmother can see how beautiful their relationship is. This just melted my heart.

That's right, Yuki! Go help Haru!

Meanwhile, Natsuki is bored because he doesn't really get to do anything in this episode...

And Akira is off being awesome yet again. (He really shines in this episode!)

He talks to his boss for a bit and then decides that "what I wish to defend is just as important."

Tapioca hangs up the phone for him, and he's ready to go be super awesome now.

And so we leave off, ready to commence the final battle or final fishing scene or whatever totally amazing thing is going to happen.

I...I really love all these boys. I hope they have a happy ending. But even if they don't, this is one of my favorite series. It balances crazy and heartwarming, and I couldn't ask for any more.
